With the dark nights upon us and summer nights but a distant memory.

People of Hoddesdon are turning to us as their local electricians to brighten up their gardens with some garden feature lights. Be it purely aesthetic or functional we wanted to answer a few of the questions we get asked.

What’s the best lighting for my garden?

Well, this is the most important question of them all and very dependent on the effect  you want to achieve and areas you are trying to light.

There are spotlights to path lights, recessed floor lights, pond lights, patio lights, post lights to wall lights. All create a unique feel and look to your garden. Garden feature lights make your outdoor spaces useable after dark and of course, there are the safety and security aspects too.

Outdoor lighting can be used to light up your view from the house or office to the garden, highlighting your gardens natural features, trees, shrubs and lawn. For this we suggest you ground lights and low-level spotlights that can illuminate key features. These lights include spike lights which can be driven into the ground, for example, a planted border. At night, the light coming through shrubs and bushes can be very dramatic. If you have a water feature, or a pond there are lights to shine on the water or up through it.

Your garden feature lights can be multifunctional as well with some of the lights acting as a security deterrent for any unwanted visitors.

Will I see the cables?

All garden feature lights will need a power supply and whilst many cables can be buried for say ground lights and spike lights, some lights will be mounted at high level, and we always do our best to conceal these cables for you.

How do I switch it on?

There are a few ways your garden feature lights can be switched. Firstly, they can be switched from a PIR which picks up on motion, this is used mostly to light pathways where you may not want them on permanently but want them for when you need to light your way.

Secondly you may wish to run them on a timer. These can be set to come on at set to turn on and off at a time that suits you best. Or alternatively there is dusk till dawn timers This photoelectric switch with timer is a perfect automated solution to turn lights on at dusk and off after a preselected time period. These normally have a setting to run from 1 to 8 hours. Can also be set to operate from dusk till dawn if required.

Wireless switching. This is becoming one of our most popular options for our customers. With no need to chase walls and zero mess, a small receiver is fitted in the garden and wireless switch that requires no cabling can be positioned wherever suits you best, allowing you to switch on your garden feature lights on whenever you want to enjoy them.
